Overview

Our single-day cruise to the fascinating country of Albania is aimed at adventurous travellers seeking something out of the ordinary. From the Port of Corfu, we follow the Albanian coast to the city port of Saranda. A 20 km guided coach tour of the south coast’s virgin shores and scattered islands is available. We pass small picturesque villages and endless fertile plains that lead to a great lake. The highlight of your day will be a visit to Butrint – an UNESCO World Heritage site. Over the centuries, the ancient town had disappeared under layers of silt and vegetation. In recent years, however, archaeologists have uncovered some of the finest working town remains in the Mediterranean. The Venetian Tower near the entrance, the ancient theatre, the Temple of Asclepius, the ancient gymnasium, the Roman Baths, the Roman Baptistery with its priceless mosaic floor, the Lion gate and the enormous Cyclopean walls will transport you back in time from 2,500 years till the 3rd century A.D.

We had a wonderful day - acutally by accident, because we missed the tour we originally booked . But the lovely staff of the Ionian Cruises rebooked us free of charge into the one-day-trip-tour to Albania. The only available tour during our stay. What can I say? We coulnd't have more luck. The tour was our highlight during our stay on Corfu! A very nice and friendly tour guide with personal insights into politics of the country and profound knowledge of historical contexts, answering every question and with a very nice approach to kids. We loved the buffet and strolling on the boardwalk of Saranda. A just perfect day! A special thank to the staff of Ionian Cuises. Extraordinary friendly customer support!

Great, informative and personable tour guide who made the archeological portion of the tour really enjoyable.

We were quite tired so didn't really explore Saranda much - but the beachfront was beautiful. We had a nice coffee in a cafe we found.

The boat rides were OK - toilets a bit ratchet but the ship was comfortable enough (if a bit windy and cold on deck - should have brought a jumper! Silly me).

Meal at the restaurant (included) was livened up by some local cats/kittens and dogs who were very needy throughout. The food was decent and generous enough, although the company was a bit awkward (my wife and I mostly kept to ourselves).

All in all well worth the trip. Remember you will have to pay 10 euros per person on board for port taxes.
Sounds rude to say but so much better than I expected!

My husband was keen to go to Albania as it is so close to where we stayed in NE Corfu, I was happy to go but would have been just as happy to give it a miss. I was so wrong, it was a lovely trip. We booked through Ionian Cruises who were efficient and friendly. Word of warning, the boat has very limited catering facilities and we regretted not picking up a delicious Greek pastry at a bakery on our way to the port. The trip took about an hour or so and we were met at the port by a delightful guide and a very professional driver. I am glad we booked to go to Butrint National Park, there is nothing particularly interesting in Saranda to occupy yourself for 6 hours before the ferry returns. Our guide was informative about her country, it’s political past and culture. She knew how to balance being informative and interesting without it becoming a lecture, we are on holiday! Butrint Park is a stunning location and the remains are incredible. It’s a hike to get around, our group were of mixed fitness so I think some found the walking up hill a bit tough but they made it. If you have limited mobility, this would be a difficult visit to access. After a morning in the national park we returned to Saranda for lunch, it’s included but pretty average in quality. It didn’t bother us as we didn’t book the trip for the food. After lunch we had 90 mins free time in Saranda. Time for a cocktail by the sea and a rather testy desert. We enjoyed our day, thank you Ionian Cruises, please pass on our thanks to our guide/driver yesterday (English group) they were very professional, welcoming and kind.

It rained 2 days during our stay but other than that it was good. Was end of season so the traffic was OK although some places looked deserted.
